If your child has a strong vocabulary yet finds it hard to hold conversations, understand social cues, or interact with peers, they may have a Social Communication Disorder. The good news? Help is available through speech therapy!

Signs to Look For:

  • Difficulty starting or joining conversations

  • Often goes off-topic or doesn’t stay on track during conversations

  • Struggles to make and keep friends

  • Talks too much or too little in social settings

  • Has trouble following “unspoken” social rules (like personal space or waiting for a turn)

  • Has a hard time reading facial expressions, tone of voice, or body language

  • Doesn’t seem to understand jokes, sarcasm, or figurative language

  • Lack of nonverbal communication, like hand gestures or facial expressions

If you notice your child experiencing difficulty with communication in social settings, having them evaluated by a speech therapist is the first step in determining what type of support they might need. At Find My Voice Speech Therapy in St. Pete, we offer a complimentary consultation to help determine whether or not your child qualifies for a speech and language evaluation. If needed, we provide comprehensive services, including evaluation, diagnosis, and personalized treatment through speech therapy right in your home, daycare, or school.

What is Social Communication Disorder?

Social Communication Disorder, also known as Pragmatic Language Disorder, affects your child’s ability to use language appropriately in everyday social situations Children with this disorder may struggle with things like picking up on social cues( like tone of voice, or facial expressions),  knowing how to start or maintain conversations, understanding implied meanings “reading between the lines”, and adjusting the way they speak depending on who they are talking to or where they are.

How does speech therapy improve Social Communication Disorder?

There are a variety of evidence-based strategies and tools that we use at Find My Voice Speech Therapy to help children with Social Communication Disorder build confidence and real-life communication skills. After evaluating your child’s specific needs, we’ll develop a treatment plan using play-based strategies like role play, social stories and scenarios, modeling and demonstration of appropriate social interactions, and using games, visuals, and repetition to reinforce key concepts. Over time, your child will learn to better understand the nuances of conversation, like when to take turns speaking, how to stay on topic, or how to adjust their tone or words depending on who they’re talking to. These small but important skills help them connect more easily with others and feel confident in social situations.

“Rachel was the answer to our prayers! Fast forward 5 months, and our son is trying to verbalize everything! He says so many words and is even starting to put words together! We now know where he was deficient and have a solid game plan that we all feel good about and understand. Each week, we have fun homework and exercises that even our son loves, which is the best part! The way Rachel teaches is FUN, and the way she breaks everything down for us to understand is awesome!” - J+C
